The new plaza connects the recently improved pedestrian trail to the existing WWI Mast Memorial that sits north of the Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska Refectory, where Lola’s Café will begin operation next spring. The Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska-Harriet Master Plan, approved by MPRB Commissioners in May 2017, included restoration of historic objects and structures within the Northeast Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska focus area.
The 40-foot tall mast is from the USS Minneapolis, which was part of the United States Navy fleet from 1894 to 1921. It was installed near the northeastern shore of Lake Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska in 1930 as a memorial to people who served in the Navy and Marine Corps during World War I.
