For many, riding bicycles in Minneapolis parks is a favorite pastime. It is becoming common knowledge that Minneapolis is renowned nationally not only for its parks system but also its bicycling. This is the result of Minneapolis leaders, community members and advocates working hard to create a livable city that reflects the needs of its residents. In fact, a recent survey of People for Parks supporters indicated that 65% of respondents enjoyed Minneapolis Parks from the seat of a bicycle - ranking in the top three reasons they spend time in Minneapolis Parks. The People for Parks board of directors intends to support and enhance these efforts by introducing a new mini-grant program.

People for Parks and the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board are collaborating to encourage safe, enjoyable and continued bicycling in Minneapolis Parks. People for Parks is now accepting applications for mini-grants that will fund effective and impactful bicycle related projects in Minneapolis Parks, ultimately connecting people with parks by way of bicycle.

The available mini-grants will fund anywhere from $100 to $2,500 dollar projects, with applications reviewed and responded to monthly. The grant criteria, available here, suggests several example projects that may enhance and improve bicycling in Minneapolis parks but ultimately leaves innovation and project concepts in the hands of applicants.

Bicycle Safety Education in the Parks
Implement free or subsidized bicycle safety courses, bicycle rodeos, and or education campaigns for use on MPRB trails and parks.

Bike Maintenance Education in the Parks
Professional bicycle technicians or instructors teach free or subsidized class that teach changing flats and maintaining/repairing bicycles.

Lock Library
Provide locks for checkout by youth and others at community centers to deter theft of otherwise unprotected bicycles.

Fix It Stands and Pumps
Provide or install fixit stations that allow park users to air up tires, adjust and/or repair their bicycles.

Bike Racks and Storage
Purchase and install additional or new bicycle racks.
