Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park
NEWS: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is pleased to announce that, thanks to a generous donation from Minneapolis native and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Jr., the basketball court at Rev Dr Martin Luther King, Jr Park is about to get a facelift.
Work could begin as early as June 25, depending on the weather. The court will be resurfaced in blue and green, and new hoops, poles, backboards, and benches will be installed. Completion is anticipated for early to mid-July.
NEWS: MRAC Grant Awarded $15,000
Metropolitan Regional Arts Council has awarded $15,000 in funding for the creation of artistic enhancements for the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in South Minneapolis. This project continues the work of using public art to create a welcoming, peaceful space reflective of Dr. King's legacy. Project Partners: Chicago Avenue Fire Arts, Obsidian Arts, Minneapolis Parks and Recreation, and Kingfield Neighborhood Association.

The Park Board, in cooperation with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Advisory Council, is beginning to implement park improvements at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in south Minneapolis that will enhance the park and further establish Dr. King’s legacy at the park. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is located east of Nicollet Ave between E 40th and E 42nd Sts.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Advisory Council, comprised of interested community members, met six times between January and April 2011 to develop a concept plan to improve the park. The council continues to meet regularly to raise money and further discuss ways to improve the park.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Advisory Council, comprised of interested community members, was established to revitalize the memorial aspect of the park, developing ideas to honor Dr. King and his legacy at the park. The advisory council met six times between January 2011 and April 2011 to finalize its plan. Through these meetings, a concept plan, as well as infrastructure and programming recommendations, were developed and presented to the board.
In 2011, the Board authorized $32,500 for improvements and/programs at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. This funding is being used for the Phase I Physical Infrastructure Improvements.

Phase I Physical Infrastructure improvements recommended by the Council to be implemented in August 2011 at an estimated cost of $32,500:
- The “Wings of Freedom Memorial Sculpture” (Freedom Form #2) honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King be moved to its original site, visible from Nicollet Avenue with landscaping and name plaque
- Clean and restore Freedom Form #2 with a new foundation for the sculpture.
- Park signage be replaced or added throughout the park with the consistent use of the revised name of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Advisory Council has continued to meet, assisting in choice of materials for concrete, benches, and signage.
